A well defined problem is half solved.

– Charles Kettering

I work everyday in an agile methodology as a UX/UI Designer and ScrumMaster making real things that actually work using Adobe Ps, Illustrator, XD, and Sketch. Jira and Confluence are used for tickets and documentation.

process

In Truth, I have never been involved in a project in which the solution was achieved in as clean and unencumbered a way as you might think from the outline here. Although the real process is more organic and messy than any process list can really fully communicate, it does represent the process generally.

Understand. This usually involves identifying assumptions, asking questions and researching. The subject, goal and audience should be identified and considered. Defining the problem is the overarching goal.

Ideate. Exploration of the problem and possible solutions are the soul of ideation. Sketching and writing thoughts about the problem are the normal processes used in this step. Often, the result looks like a crude UI or state map with notes scribbled around it.

Design. This step uses the results of ideation to build workflows, assets and or prototypes  to describe the desired solution to the problem.

Evaluate. Making judgments about how well the solution resolves the problem is the purpose of this step. Though the final step before delivery, it is frequently a springboard for reentry into the process at a previous step.

about

I am a designer, illustrator and educator currently spending my days doing User Experience and User Interface Design in the automotive navigation and infotainment space. Evenings are often spent teaching design and illustration courses, or chasing my wife or one of our four children around our home.

I have an MFA, and experience in UX/UI Design, Print & Web Design, Illustration and teaching all of that stuff.

I believe:

The ability to learn is the the single most important and desirable skill.

Beauty is not in the eye of the beholder.

A well defined problem is half solved.

Design serves us best by providing solutions to problems.

Seeking truth rather than originality in our work is more likely to yield both.

Simple ain't easy.

The borrower is slave to the lender.

"Stuff" makes life, and design, more complicated.

Happy is inferior to meaningful... so is cool.
